Our by-laws do not cover who runs a meeting if the president and vice president are not available. they do however say Roberts rules will be applied to any isuue not covered in the by-laws. Who would be next in line to run a meeting. Our officers are President, VP, Board of directors, recording secretary, treasurer. corrosponding secretary, commissioner. It is a little league football organization. help!

The secretary (or any member if the secretary is also absent) calls the meeting to order and conducts a brief election for a chair pro tem (a temporary presiding officer). There is no other automatic line of succession beyond president and vice-president(s).

(You'd also need to elect a secretary pro tem if the secretary is absent.)

If the president and vice-president are absent the assembly should elect a chair pro tem to preside. See RONR (11th ed.), pp. 452-453.

Also, although the secretary is named as the person to call the meeting to order and conduct the election (in the absence of President and VP), this in no way implies that the secretary should be the 'next in line' to preside. In fact, that's a bad idea, since it is extremely difficult for one person to competently chair the meeting, and perform the duties of secretary at the same time.

That's right. If the secretary is to preside, it's a good idea to elect a secretary pro tem.
