If there is a rule requiring the vote to be taken by ballot (one of the possibilities mentioned by J.J.), then you must vote by ballot. However, the ballot should not have 'yes', 'no' options on it. You can only vote against a candidate by voting for a different candidate. In an election with a sole nominee, this could be done via write-in votes.
