ripken7673 Posted April 5, 2012 at 06:05 PM Report Share Posted April 5, 2012 at 06:05 PM Can a President who is an Ex-officio member of a sub-committee be chair person of that certain committee?
Trina Posted April 5, 2012 at 06:15 PM Report Share Posted April 5, 2012 at 06:15 PM Sure. An ex-officio member is a member, with exactly the same rights as any other member of the committee. The ex-officio origin of the person's membership, in and of itself, would not prevent the President from being chair of a committee.

ripken7673 Posted April 5, 2012 at 06:24 PM Author Report Share Posted April 5, 2012 at 06:24 PM It just seems to coincidental that the President picks the committee chairs and the committee itself and can make himself a chair person.

g40 Posted April 6, 2012 at 12:00 AM Report Share Posted April 6, 2012 at 12:00 AM One factor/risk of an ex-officio member being on a committee or being chair of a committee is that such membership is subject to change based on outside actions. As soon as the reason for the ex-officio membership ceases, that member is no longer a member. So, for example, if the President of the US is an ex-officio member of the board of your organization, Barack Obama would be on your board. Suppose your organization likes that very much. However, if next January, President Mitt Romney takes office, then Mitt Romney immediately is on your board and Barack Obama is immediately out.
