Guest gailk Posted June 19, 2012 at 09:51 PM Report Share Posted June 19, 2012 at 09:51 PM This question has two parts:1. Once nomininations have been closed, is it acceptable to re-open nominations the day of the election for additional nominees?2. If a nominee drops out, leaving no nominee for this position, is it acceptable to re-open nominations the day of the election? Or does the organization just accept write-in votes? jstackpo Posted June 19, 2012 at 09:54 PM Report Share Posted June 19, 2012 at 09:54 PM Barring any explicit rules in your bylaws to the contrary, "Yes" to both questions -- well, the first one in No. 2.Write in votes are always in order.
Guest Guest Posted June 19, 2012 at 10:12 PM Report Share Posted June 19, 2012 at 10:12 PM I should clarify #1: There is one nominee for president, and some folks are not happy (even though no one else came forward during nominations). They now want to re-open nominations to allow more of a selection on the day of the vote.
jstackpo Posted June 19, 2012 at 10:24 PM Report Share Posted June 19, 2012 at 10:24 PM Distress with the single nominee (or a whole passel of them for that matter) is what floor nominations are designed to relieve. It does require a majority vote to reopen nominations that have been previously closed. So the unhappy folks will get a sort of informal straw vote when the motion to re-open is made and voted on.Even if the re-open nominations vote fails, the folks can write-in their choice.
