Question: if we want to now discuss the topic, do we have to have a motion passed to take the tabled discussion off the table? Or, can we just go ahead and discuss the topic?

You just used the wrong word for what you did. The chair should bring the motion up, automatically, under the order of business heading (see p. 26) "Unfinished Business and General Orders. Technically the postponed motion is a "General Order" for that following meeting.
