David A Foulkes Posted July 11, 2012 at 10:56 AM Report Share Posted July 11, 2012 at 10:56 AM George, it's time to send your chairman back to the Ministry of Behavior for some retraining. What the chair should say is "those opposed, say no". (RONR 11th Ed., p. 45 l. 27ff; RONR-IB 2nd Ed., p. 25) Perhaps what the Board member should say is "Mr. Chairman, what the hell does that mean?" And then, follow Mr. Wynn's recommendation in the previous post.[This thread throws light on a puzzling quirk of a former chair in an organization I belonged to years ago... when calling for the 'no' votes, he usually appeared to say, "all those opposed, step outside!" This odd locution typically happened on motions where no one in the room was actually opposed, so I assumed it was a joke of some kind. To add to the confusion, he had a regional dialect not shared by most of the other members. When he was asked one day what the heck he was saying, he did clarify, but 'same sign' didn't stick with me, since it made even less sense than "step outside!" ]
