Guest mk Posted July 17, 2012 at 08:36 PM Report Share Posted July 17, 2012 at 08:36 PM We have a small not for profit seniors society. There is a manager who is paid by the society to supervise other paid staff and to run programs for seniors. A successful motion was made to make her ex officio to all standing committees. The bylaws do not address ex officio members. Please advise whether this manager has the right to vote when she attends committee meetings.
jstackpo Posted July 17, 2012 at 08:42 PM Report Share Posted July 17, 2012 at 08:42 PM Yes, she does. "Ex Officio" describes how someone gets on a committee (or becomes a member of any group). Once there, the person has all the same rights as any other member.Did the folks who adopted the motion realize this?
Trina Posted July 17, 2012 at 09:15 PM Report Share Posted July 17, 2012 at 09:15 PM Since you're talking about standing committees, take a look at what (if anything) the bylaws say about how how these committees are to be populated. It may be that a plain vanilla motion appointing the manager an ex officio member of all standing committees is not in accordance with the bylaws.I realize this is coming at your question from a different angle... yes, an ex officio member of a committee has the same rights as any other member; however, you first need to be sure the manager actually is properly a member of the various standing committees.
