Guest Writers Edge Posted August 14, 2012 at 12:09 AM Report Share Posted August 14, 2012 at 12:09 AM Question concerning Nomination CommitteeOur Constitution & By Laws state our Nomination committee will a total of 3 members. One member from the current board of directors, with two other members and two alternates chosen from general membership. It is understood that none of the members of the Nominating Committee shall be chosen as a candidate for the club election. If all members of the current board wish to be considered for re-election, then a non-board member shall take the place of the board member on this committee. Our club has the position of “Past President”. It is automatic position, when a new president is elected.QuestionIf, the current President does not wish to be re-elected, would he/she be able to be part of the Nomination committee? The current president will become the “Past President” the upcoming year.ThanksWriters Edge
Gary Novosielski Posted August 14, 2012 at 12:15 AM Report Share Posted August 14, 2012 at 12:15 AM RONR recommends strongly that the president should have nothing whatever to do with the nominating committee. Your rules, however, are your rules. So you need to follow them, and if necessary, figure out what they mean first. We can't do that here, because what your rules mean is not something that can be found within RONR. Guest Edgar Posted August 14, 2012 at 12:50 AM Report Share Posted August 14, 2012 at 12:50 AM It is understood that none of the members of the Nominating Committee shall be chosen as a candidate for the club election.Who "understands" that? Is it a rule or merely a custom?RONR specifically states that members of the nominating committee should not be prevented from being candidates (since you could block someone's candidacy simply be naming him to the committee). Members should be free to nominate and vote for anyone. But, as noted, you have your own rules and you'll have to live with them.As for the position of (immediate) past president, most here think that's unwise as well. What if your president is a crook? What if he's removed from office? What if he simply turned out to be a lousy president? Well, you're stuck with him for another year (or more).
