Guest Sarah Posted August 16, 2012 at 12:03 AM Report Share Posted August 16, 2012 at 12:03 AM During a meeting for a non-profit group is it possible for the chairperson to stop someone from bringing up a topic under NEW BUSINESS when NEW BUSINESS is allowed for on the agenda? Can a Chairperson stop someone from speaking?

Guest Jen Posted August 16, 2012 at 07:38 PM Report Share Posted August 16, 2012 at 07:38 PM What if 'new business' on the agenda is specified/itemized and the 'new business 'someone brings up is not an agenda item under 'new business'? Wouldn't thatsomeone first have to motion to amend the agenda to includetheir non-specified/itemized 'new business' topic first?
jstackpo Posted August 16, 2012 at 07:55 PM Report Share Posted August 16, 2012 at 07:55 PM The common meaning of "New Business" is that anything (appropriate) may be brought up.An agenda, listing some speciic "New Business" items, is just a form of reminder of what will, presumably, come up. But it isn't an exclusive list. However some organizations do require, in their bylaws, advance notice of ALL new business, which would make the list exclusive. But that depends on the rules in the bylaws, not RONR's rules.
