Guest Janet Posted September 18, 2012 at 01:00 AM Report Share Posted September 18, 2012 at 01:00 AM Can the President who chairs the annual meeting turn the gavel over to the Nominations Chair and permit the Nominations Chair to conduct the nominations/election portion of the meeting, not turning the gavel back to the President until elections have been completed? Gary Novosielski Posted September 18, 2012 at 01:03 AM Report Share Posted September 18, 2012 at 01:03 AM According to RONR that would not be correct. The president should preside during the election process, should select the tellers to count the votes, and announce the results after the tellers report the vote counts. Tim Wynn Posted September 18, 2012 at 02:05 PM Report Share Posted September 18, 2012 at 02:05 PM Can the President who chairs the annual meeting turn the gavel over to the Nominations Chair and permit the Nominations Chair to conduct the nominations/election portion of the meeting, not turning the gavel back to the President until elections have been completed? The president should not be doing this. It is his duty to preside. If he is doing this because he is a nominee, he should see RONR (11th ed.), p. 451, l. 35 - p. 452, l. 3. If he is doing it because he thinks the nominating committee is in charge of the election, he should see RONR 11th ed.), p. 435, l. 4-5.
