Guest Jim Russell Posted October 31, 2012 at 05:16 PM Report Share Posted October 31, 2012 at 05:16 PM I was recently involved in an appeal hearing for my association, and I carefully printed up my presentation to present to the board. When I was brought before the board, a telephone was placed in the center of the table, and I was informed that one of the board members didn't want to drive to the meeting, so she was on a conference phone. So much for my carefully prepared presentation. Are the board members required to be physically present at a meeting that is going to decide the future status of a member? Why schedule and appear if the members that are to evaluate the appeal fail to be present? Physical presence is needed to hear and see the presentation. How can this member pass judgement on someone without granting the courtesy of being at the actual hearing? What is the protocol on this situation? JohnR Posted October 31, 2012 at 05:27 PM Report Share Posted October 31, 2012 at 05:27 PM Electronic attendance must be authorized by the bylaws. If it is not, then the member on the telephone is not permitted to do anything but listen; if she participated in a vote and her vote could make a difference, then the decision may be challenged by a Point of Order raised at a board meeting by a board member.
