Guest Lisa Posted November 11, 2012 at 08:57 PM Report Share Posted November 11, 2012 at 08:57 PM Our club voted on a motion that was made. It was voted down. Is there a way to prevent the same motion from being brought up in subsequent meetings? If it is brought up at every meeting it will detract from the focus of the club. If it is brought up at every meeting it will detract from the focus of the club.In general, a motion that is lost can be renewed at subsequent sessions. Preventing the motion from being allowed to come before the assembly again would require the ADOPTION of a motion. The details of the situation will dictate which motion to adopt. This is commonly done in several ways. A rule could be adopted that requires certain motions to be referred to a certain committee for approval before coming before the assembly. Certain motions could have their consideration restricted to certain meetings, such as the annual meeting, and certain motions could have their vote requirement raised. For any of this, however, a special rule of order or a bylaw would be required.
Guest Edgar Posted November 11, 2012 at 09:16 PM Report Share Posted November 11, 2012 at 09:16 PM If it is brought up at every meeting it will detract from the focus of the club.If there is little support for this motion it should take only a few seconds to dispose of it. See, for example, FAQ #11. Assigning the question to a committee is another option.
Rev Ed Posted November 11, 2012 at 10:55 PM Report Share Posted November 11, 2012 at 10:55 PM I am with the Committee option if you really want to stop its consideration at every meeting. Mind you if the members of the group don't change, then it will only take a few seconds to deal with.
