Guest Guest Posted November 14, 2012 at 01:11 AM Report Share Posted November 14, 2012 at 01:11 AM In an upcoming election 3 new board members are to be elected. There are 6 nominees for the board, and the instructions are to vote for 3. How should ballots with fewer than 3 selections be handled? If the ballots without selections marked not counted, are the ballots thrown out entirely, or just not counted for the election of board members. President, Vice President, and Secretary are being elected on the same ballot.

Any ballot that contains a vote for a board member counts as one vote cast in determining the total number of votes cast for board positions, when drafting the tellers' report. A candidate for the board must receive a majority of that number to be elected. Voters may vote for fewer than 3 candidates for the board.

That would be a partial abstention which is perfectly valid (RONR p. 407 ll. 15-19). Count those one or two votes the member did vote for.
