Guest margaret Posted January 25, 2013 at 09:59 PM Report Share Posted January 25, 2013 at 09:59 PM In accordance with the society's bylaws, the president of the society has to step down after completing four terms (each term being two years) and cannot stand for election again for two years. The president wishes to continue on the board, and it has been suggested that she be made ex officio to the board. Once the president steps down, she will hold no office within the society. Is it allowed to make her ex officio.
jstackpo Posted January 25, 2013 at 10:20 PM Report Share Posted January 25, 2013 at 10:20 PM Allowed? Not without amending the bylaws. And if you do that, do it with care. Maybe there is, or was, a good reason why a long-term president should be required to "go away" (but still be an association member) for a while. Guest Guest Posted January 25, 2013 at 10:27 PM Report Share Posted January 25, 2013 at 10:27 PM Perhaps, advisory to the board would be a better idea?
Guest Edgar Posted January 25, 2013 at 10:28 PM Report Share Posted January 25, 2013 at 10:28 PM The president wishes to continue on the board, and it has been suggested that she be made ex officio to the board. Is it allowed to make her ex officio. For more on ex-officio members, see FAQ #2.And beware of unintended consequences, if you make the immediate past president an ex-officio member of your board (by amending your bylaws), that will apply to every future immediate past president, not just this one. Stick around this forum for a while (or search for "past president" (with the quotations marks)) and you'll soon see why that's often not such a great idea. If you want the former president's input, simply invite him to meetings.
Guest Edgar Posted January 25, 2013 at 10:30 PM Report Share Posted January 25, 2013 at 10:30 PM The president wishes to continue on the board . . .Well, you can always amend the bylaws to remove the term limits. Then the voters get to decide how long someone remains on the board.
