David A Foulkes Posted February 1, 2013 at 12:18 PM Report Share Posted February 1, 2013 at 12:18 PM Iam working on a comittee on by laws and the current by laws says the president is also the parlimentarian,,,,this just doesnt seen right to meRONR does suggest that smaller organizations should probably not require the services of a parliamentarian, but in circumstances where it might be helpful or needed, the section that addresses this would lead one to think it should be someone other than the president, since the parliamentarian's primary function is to advise the president. With any luck, your president would be well versed in parliamentary matters and procedures, as well as the bylaws, so you would hope he would take care of things properly anyway. That said, RONR contains no rule that prevents the president from also being the parliamentarian. If that "just doesn't seem right" to you, you are entitled to that opinion.

BryanSullo Posted February 1, 2013 at 02:23 PM Report Share Posted February 1, 2013 at 02:23 PM I doubt it.It seemed like the answers to my question would have been applicable to this poster's question. Apparently not. I won't risk causing further offense by asking why.

There doesn't seem to be much point in having the President advise himself.
J. J. Posted February 2, 2013 at 09:20 PM Report Share Posted February 2, 2013 at 09:20 PM The president can certainly advise himself and consult with himself. I am wondering if, in this organization, the parliamentarian has other specified duties.
Dan Honemann Posted February 2, 2013 at 09:36 PM Report Share Posted February 2, 2013 at 09:36 PM The president can certainly advise himself and consult with himself. And if he disagrees with himself, he is free to ignore his own advice, but if this happens frequently he may find it necessary to resign.
