Guest Marsha Posted October 20, 2013 at 11:55 PM Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 11:55 PM Can the nominee keep tally of the votes? Our current Secretary kept the tally of the votes of which she was one of the nominees. Is this proper? Can't find anything in RONR about it. Need title and page number ASAP. DrEntropy Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:02 AM Report Share Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:02 AM RONR page 414, l. 6 ff.The chair is free to appoint whom he wishes, but should not appoint tellers who have a direct personal involvement in the question. jstackpo Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:08 AM Report Share Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:08 AM Well, it doesn't sound like a very good idea (unless you really really trust your secretary). But RONR doesn't say anything about it. What RONR does say is that the presidng officer appointes the tellers, p. 414 -- it isn't "automatically" any particular person. So you end up trusting the judgment of the presider, but at least you know who (presumably) did the appointing of the tellers.
Guest Marsha Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:10 AM Report Share Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:10 AM Thanks, but can you site Robert's on this? While I agree it seems improper is there a rule to this affect?
DrEntropy Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:11 AM Report Share Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:11 AM Two people gave you the page reference, and perhaps I should have said the reference is for Roberts Rules of Order Newly Revised, 11th edition.
jstackpo Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:16 AM Report Share Posted October 21, 2013 at 12:16 AM Guest_Marsha: Do you perhaps have some other (earlier) edition of of RONR, or (shudder) some other book entirely, with "Robert" in the title. You can get the right book here.
