Guest Erin Seaman Posted January 3, 2014 at 03:12 PM Report Share Posted January 3, 2014 at 03:12 PM At a recent meeting, a motion was made and seconded, but before it was voted on, discussion occured and the member who made the original motion revised it. The revised motion was then seconded and voted on. The original motion was never voted on. How do I show this in the minutes?
jstackpo Posted January 3, 2014 at 03:29 PM Report Share Posted January 3, 2014 at 03:29 PM In effect, the original main motion was proposed, then amended, and then the amended ("revised") motion was adopted, although you did it in a slightly non-standard manner. All you include in the minutes is the text of the motion that was (finally) adopted. Meanwhile get a copy of RONRIB:"Roberts Rules of Order Newly Revised In Brief", Updated Second Edition (Da Capo Press, Perseus Books Group, 2011). It is a splendid summary of all the rules you will really need in all but the most exceptional situations. And only $7.50! You can read it in an evening. Get both RONRIB and RONR (scroll down) at this link. Or in your local bookstore. and read up on how amendments to motions are properly handled. Dan Honemann Posted January 3, 2014 at 03:55 PM Report Share Posted January 3, 2014 at 03:55 PM However, you should be aware of the fact that, in a situation such as the one you described, the member who makes the original motion has no power to modify (revise) it without permission of the assembly, granted by majority vote (or unanimous consent). In this connection, see RONR, 11th.ed. pages 295-98.
