DChamp Posted January 3, 2016 at 10:20 PM Report Share Posted January 3, 2016 at 10:20 PM This is an odd one. We had our elections, all were chosen fine, then before first next meeting, Sargent at Arms says he can't fulfill duties. Does the person who ran against, in a very close race get the job, or do we have to re-vote again? We have nothing in our by-laws concerning this. Thanks in advance. jstackpo Posted January 3, 2016 at 10:36 PM Report Share Posted January 3, 2016 at 10:36 PM Do your bylaws have any rules pertaining to filling officer vacancies in general? If so, follow them. If not, run a new election. The (previous) runner-up does not automatically get the job. Of course he is free to run in the new election.
DChamp Posted January 3, 2016 at 10:50 PM Author Report Share Posted January 3, 2016 at 10:50 PM No, they do not. We're actually trying to NOT have a new election, and have the runner-up assume the position. Thanks.
jstackpo Posted January 3, 2016 at 11:03 PM Report Share Posted January 3, 2016 at 11:03 PM Try all you want, but someone who knows the rules (RONR, p. 467, 575) could call you on it, to your (presumed) embarrassment. And you'll end up running a second election after all. Don't forget, the person who lost the election (even though close) might have lost for a very good reason or two. Do it right the first time, and save yourself trouble later on.
