Guest Val Posted February 7, 2017 at 11:09 PM Report Share Posted February 7, 2017 at 11:09 PM In a school board meeting, staff contracts were up for renewal. One particular contract had 2 votes in favor, 2 votes against and 1 abstention. The motion is dead so what happens to the contract renewal? Richard Brown Posted February 7, 2017 at 11:12 PM Report Share Posted February 7, 2017 at 11:12 PM If an affirmative vote was required to renew the contract, the motion failed. A motion fails on a tie vote.

What happens is, whatever happens when a contract renewal is DEFEATED. You don't treat this situation any differently just because the defeat came in the form of a tie vote. -- A tie represents rejection of the proposition. *** Thank the gentleman (or lady) for their services, and escort them to the door. Whatever normally happens when a motion to renew a contract fails to get a majority vote. The motion did not "die"; it was rejected.
