debbie111 Posted June 12, 2018 at 04:20 PM Report Share Posted June 12, 2018 at 04:20 PM Our budget (for High School Dance Team booster club, which is a 501 C3), has $250 in it for next year's team welcome dinner. The junior class is responsible for putting the welcome dinner on. Last year there was no money in the budget for the welcome dinner, but last year's treasurer told us to ask this year if they would include money in the budget to refund us our costs- and she said it could not come out of last season's because it was not for that season's team. So last night we were going over the budget for this year, and they have included $250 for the welcome dinner... but they said it is not for the welcome dinner that we had for this year's team (the welcome dinner was held before the budget was created)- they said that it is to help with the welcome dinner for next year's team. I argued that we cannot have money in the budget that this year's members are paying for to benefit next year's team. Several people argued with me (the president and treasurer, included) that it is okay and that they are starting it now so that it helps for next year and future years. What are the proper rules regarding this type of budgeted item?

What are the proper rules regarding this type of budgeted item? RONR has nothing to say on this subject. Your society is free to budget as it pleases, subject only to any restrictions in its own rules or applicable law.
Richard Brown Posted June 12, 2018 at 05:53 PM Report Share Posted June 12, 2018 at 05:53 PM Debbie, I agree with Mr. Martin and would emphasize that it is your SOCIETY... your MEMBERSHIP.... not any particular officers... who decide those issues by majority vote. Your membership decides how and when it is going to spend its money and what it is going to be used for.
Gary Novosielski Posted June 12, 2018 at 06:18 PM Report Share Posted June 12, 2018 at 06:18 PM After the arguing was done, was there any vote? That would probably be the way to decide the issue, unless, as Mr. Martin noted, there are restrictions placed on such matters by your bylaws or other laws. Is the welcome dinner for next year's team held this year? That might make a difference.
