If the President of an association voluntarily resigns from office, in order to run for the Board of Directors of another organization (and subsequently LOSES that election), does that person automatically resume the presidency of the original organization?   Doesn't the Vice President of that organization automatically become the new President, until such time as another election takes place?

No.

Yes, although unless your bylaws say otherwise, the vice president becomes president for the remainder of the term, not just until an election can be held.

No, the president does not resume the office after losing the other election.  Once the resignation is accepted, it is irreversible.  And the vice-president becomes president for the unexpired remainder of the term, creating a vacancy in the office of vice president.

For this reason, it is quite unwise to resign before the results of the election are known.
