Steps needed to amend the record after the chair called the wrong vote.

During a recent meeting of our board of directors, the vote on a motion was called incorrectly by the board chair. 

He stated that the motion did not carry, when in fact it did receive the majority needed to pass. 

Because the vote was already contentious, we want to make sure we take the appropriate steps to correct it so that the record reflects that the vote carried. 

What are the proper steps needed to accomplish this? Is it as simple as correcting the meeting minutes or does more formal action need to be taken?

Guest Julia, unfortunately the announcement of the chair that the motion passed failed, without someone raising a timely point of order, is controlling even though incorrect.  The point of order would have to be raised immediately at the time of the breach... the improper announcement that the motion failed. RONR (12th ed.) 4:41, 24:7 (including the footnote), 24:8  If this happened in a regular (or special) meeting that has already ended, it is too late for a motion to Reconsider.  A motion to rescind the motion is also out of order because there is nothing to rescind.  What can be done at this point is at the next regular meeting or at a special meeting called for this purpose, the motion can simply be "renewed", that is, made again as if it had never been made before.  If it passes, and the chair properly announces that it passes, it is done.

The announcement of the chair stands, if no Point of Order was raised at the time.

So the proper course of action is to make the motion again at the next meeting and pay attention to the voting process.
