Guest Rincon Posted December 8, 2010 at 03:13 AM Report Share Posted December 8, 2010 at 03:13 AM A vote was held for the slate of officers of our homeowners' association. At the conclusion of the vote, many members questioned how many votes were cast for Candidate A vs. Candidate B but were told that it was improper to reveal those results and were informed that the ballots had to be destroyed. Is that correct according to Roberts Rules of Order?
David A Foulkes Posted December 8, 2010 at 03:28 AM Report Share Posted December 8, 2010 at 03:28 AM A vote was held for the slate of officers of our homeowners' association. At the conclusion of the vote, many members questioned how many votes were cast for Candidate A vs. Candidate B but were told that it was improper to reveal those results and were informed that the ballots had to be destroyed. Is that correct according to Roberts Rules of Order? Not so much. In a ballot election, a tellers committee should be appointed (the number of members depending a bit on how many members are present), and they count the ballots and record them on a Tellers' report sheet. They read the count aloud, and then present the report to the Chair, who also reads the count aloud, and announces the results. This could be that someone was elected, or some candidates did not receive a majority of votes causing an incomplete election, meaning you would vote again for those offices. The results, and the tellers' report, are recorded in the minutes. The assembly could then order the ballots be destroyed (typically if there was no expectation of a recount) or that they be held by the Secretary for a period of time, just to be on the safe side.
