Guest RobertSp Posted May 4, 2017 at 01:36 PM Report Share Posted May 4, 2017 at 01:36 PM Our Synagogue board has made an offer to the Cantor for the next two years but some members object and may bring the issue up at the upcoming Annual Membership Meeting. Would this be in order?
Chris Harrison Posted May 4, 2017 at 01:42 PM Report Share Posted May 4, 2017 at 01:42 PM Maybe. It depends on if the Board has the unilateral authority to make offers to the Cantor.
Guest RobertSp Posted May 4, 2017 at 06:06 PM Report Share Posted May 4, 2017 at 06:06 PM Thank you. According to New York law, only the Rabbi's salary is under the Congregation's authority. Other employment matters are generally for the Board.
SaintCad Posted May 4, 2017 at 06:26 PM Report Share Posted May 4, 2017 at 06:26 PM What do your bylaws say. It may require new business to be submitted before the meeting.

While I agree with Josh, I would note that the Congregation may be able to express an opinion of the Board's decision or of the cantor himself (though I have known a cantor who would be "herself").
