DannyB Posted January 31, 2011 at 08:10 PM Report Share Posted January 31, 2011 at 08:10 PM We are a baptist church and would like to know if there is any information in the Roberts Rule of Order book that will explain to us when a person is in "good standing" so they can vote at business meeting's that are on the first Wednesday of each month? George Mervosh Posted January 31, 2011 at 08:13 PM Report Share Posted January 31, 2011 at 08:13 PM "The answer to your question depends upon whether or not you are using the term "good standing" in the same sense as it is used in RONR. When RONR uses the term "members in good standing" (RONR, 10th ed., p. 6, l. 20-21, p. 279, l. 34-35, p. 585, l. 7-8) it is referring to members whose membership rights are not in suspension, either as a consequence of disciplinary proceedings or by operation of some specific provision in the bylaws of the organization."Mr. Honemann, of this board and the RONR Authorship Team wrote that..... DannyB Posted January 31, 2011 at 08:38 PM Author Report Share Posted January 31, 2011 at 08:38 PM So if it is not in the bylaws of the church about "good standing" then a member of that church can just come to one meeting of the year and vote as they chose. David A Foulkes Posted January 31, 2011 at 11:18 PM Report Share Posted January 31, 2011 at 11:18 PM So if it is not in the bylaws of the church about "good standing" then a member of that church can just come to one meeting of the year and vote as they chose. And unless your bylaws or other rules mandate attendance, they don't even have to attend. And if they do, they don't even have to vote. It may be that all your bylaws dictate is payment of annual dues, in which case, as long as the check clears, they're still members even if you never see them again and they will still be "in good standing."What do your bylaws say about it?
