Guest Rosie N Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:49 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:49 PM Our club now has a proposed bylaw change on the table regarding membership status. We have two people who have been members in good standing for the last 4-5 years. Now the bylaw revision committee is proposing that we change their status to "friend" status and rescind all voting privilges just because they live outside city limits. Is this legal? Also, who usually makes up a bylaw review committee? Board members or non-board members? Thanks!Rosie
Guest Edgar Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:54 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:54 PM Is this legal? Also, who usually makes up a bylaw review committee? As far as RONR is concerned, your club is free to establish whatever membership categories it wants. And it's free to put whoever it wants on the bylaws committee. Or have no bylaws committee at all.
jstackpo Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:55 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:55 PM Legal? Ask a lawyer. But it is proper to change criteria even if this removes someone from an office or even membership. There might be "contract" concerns involved, but that takes up back to "legal". p. 597-8Committee? Whomever the board (or general membership) wants on the committee is fine. RONR does NOT limit eligibility to serve on a bylaw revision committee, but see RONR (11th ed.), p. 566, ll. 27-35.EDITED: to add not. (To add or add not, that is the question)

Gary Novosielski Posted October 23, 2011 at 07:31 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2011 at 07:31 PM Something fell down the "not hole", it looks like. And while it's certainly proper for the bylaws to limit membership to those who live within a certain geopolitical area, it would be bad form to exclude two specific people by name, which I presume was not your intent. Tim Wynn Posted October 23, 2011 at 07:52 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2011 at 07:52 PM It does?Of course, I meant the opposite of what I wrote.
