hofergregory Posted July 20, 2012 at 04:03 PM Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 at 04:03 PM We recently had a membership meeting where one member asked endless questions at the meeting. What options to other meeting attendees have when this occurs?Doesn't RONR limit the speaking time of any one member to 10 minutes (there was no motion on the floor at the time) and if so would a motion to limit a speakers time to a lower time be in order? Or would a motion to limit a speaker questions to one at a time, allowing all members an opportunity to speak before returning the floor to that member again to ask a second question, be in order?Where can this be found in RONR? Gary c Tesser Posted July 20, 2012 at 04:24 PM Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 at 04:24 PM To the point. Nobody is supposed to be making speeches, questions or whatever, without a motion pending. So how is this person asking endless questions in the first place? (Citations available.)
Rev Ed Posted July 20, 2012 at 09:46 PM Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 at 09:46 PM If you are having an "Open Forum" at the end of themeeting (many organizations will call it "New Business" during a general membership meeting which is incorrect according to RONR) then the organization should allow people to take turns and the Chairman should try to make sure that the individual does not dominate the floor if others are interested. However, moving on to the next issue would help through a motion to end the "Open Forum" (or "Q+A Session" or whatever you want to call it) and move onto the next matter - or if at the end of the meeting (when these issues normally take place in my experience) then a motion to adjourn could be made.
