sdhurley13 Posted September 5, 2012 at 09:01 PM Report Share Posted September 5, 2012 at 09:01 PM As our season comes to an end, so do a few of the board member terms. We have a couple members on the board now (Treasurer and At Large Member that are married) and they have a son who will most likely be nominated and seconded by his parents for an available At Large Member. The current Treasurer will be making a bid for President, therefore nominating his wife for the treasurer spot, and then nominating his son for the At Large Member. All three positions are executive board member with voting rights. Is there any thing in Roberts Rules to prevent this type of monoply or conflict of intrest from happening? Guest Edgar Posted September 5, 2012 at 09:07 PM Report Share Posted September 5, 2012 at 09:07 PM Is there any thing in Roberts Rules to prevent this type of monoply or conflict of intrest from happening?Yes. If enough members think it's a bad idea, someone else will be elected.

sMargaret Posted September 5, 2012 at 09:44 PM Report Share Posted September 5, 2012 at 09:44 PM But is there anything in Roberts rules to prevent it if there is not enough votes for another person. There might be something in your own bylaws against it, or you can add something to your own bylaws. RONR does not preclude family members, or even just good friends, from serving in the same organization.
David A Foulkes Posted September 5, 2012 at 10:23 PM Report Share Posted September 5, 2012 at 10:23 PM Damn shame, cuz that can and will mostly likely sway our program into the hole.If enough members (i.e. a majority) feel the way you (apparently) do, they should nominate and vote for someone else. If they don't or won't, oh well.
tctheatc Posted September 5, 2012 at 11:36 PM Report Share Posted September 5, 2012 at 11:36 PM being married (or blood related) is not a guarantee that two folks will agree on anything. Just ask my wife. And if the couple got divorced, that would not guarantee they would have differing views or agree any less.

If it helps, you can always utter the immortal line first delivered by Dick Tuck, "The people have spoken--the bastards!"
