Guest Thomas M. Eliason Posted October 5, 2012 at 05:02 PM Report Share Posted October 5, 2012 at 05:02 PM I recently was called before my (IBT) E-Board for questioning concerning a union member charge that I brought agains`t 3 co-workers. I asked if my attorney could speaker link by phone to my portion of the questions and my answers. I was told that I was allowed to be represented by a fellow union member in good standing but not my attorney. Can they make that stipulation? Gary c Tesser Posted October 5, 2012 at 05:12 PM Report Share Posted October 5, 2012 at 05:12 PM If your union has any applicable rules, they will govern. But if only the rules in RONR apply, then: (1) non-members, such as your attorney, have no rights at the meeting, including the right to speak; and (2) absentees, same thing. So it looks as if you're out of luck here.
Gary Novosielski Posted October 6, 2012 at 11:36 PM Report Share Posted October 6, 2012 at 11:36 PM It's going to depend on the union rules and bylaws. Get a copy and read them. If it says "a representative of the member's own choosing" without specifically saying that person must be a member, then you're on firm ground. Otherwise, not so much.
