Guest Pete Posted October 13, 2012 at 11:48 PM Report Share Posted October 13, 2012 at 11:48 PM Sorry if this has been addressed- I tried searching with no luck. Question: Must a motion be "held over" for a set period of time before debate may be engaged and a vote taken? Background: Our organization requires that a motion must be "tabled" for 30 days before discussion maY take place and a vote taken. The organization bylaws are silent as to this and there are no Standing Rules to this effect. The reason given is that: "Roberts Rules require it." I can't find it in RRNR. Thanks. Guest Pete Posted October 14, 2012 at 12:24 AM Report Share Posted October 14, 2012 at 12:24 AM Noted, my conclusion as well. So, absent a bylaw provision requiring it, a motion may be debated and voted upon when made.
JohnR Posted October 14, 2012 at 12:45 AM Report Share Posted October 14, 2012 at 12:45 AM Yes, if you are talking about a main motion. Some other types of motions are undebatable. And there are a couple of forms of the motion to Reconsider that can't be taken up immediately.
