Guest paul Posted December 2, 2012 at 06:38 PM Report Share Posted December 2, 2012 at 06:38 PM our organization has just started showing more than one item in a motion to be voted on. Example: it is recommended that members vote to A: receive this report; B: Accept the recommendations of Staff; C: Postpone the recommendation that Store #1212 be closed until February 2013 Board Meeting. Is it ok to have multiple recommedations voted on at the same time (not separated)? Is a postponement ok within a motion? Comments and page references requested. Thank you, Paul
Chris Harrison Posted December 2, 2012 at 06:45 PM Report Share Posted December 2, 2012 at 06:45 PM As long as no one demands them be considered separately they can be voted on in one motion. However, upon the demand of a single member any or all of them would need to be voted on separately (RONR pp. 274-275).
jstackpo Posted December 2, 2012 at 07:34 PM Report Share Posted December 2, 2012 at 07:34 PM Actually... there is no need (indeed it may be a bad idea - see p. 508) to move to "receive" a report, and it may (depending on the content of the staff recommendations) also be risky to "accept" them all (at once?). Better that the "recommendations" be presented as individual motions (to do, or not do, &c. something) and they be voted on separately. It may take more time, but, in the end, it will be MUCH clearer what the assembly "really" wants. At Guest_Paul's meeting I'd be the one to demand a division if it looked like a good idea.
