Guest Lisa LeBlanc Posted May 2, 2014 at 07:42 PM Report Share Posted May 2, 2014 at 07:42 PM We have a few essentially defunct committees. Our handbook does call for elections to them, and we can't change the handbook before elections (it has to go to our board who won't meet in a while). Can we vote to leave those seats vacant? Guest Edgar Posted May 2, 2014 at 07:57 PM Report Share Posted May 2, 2014 at 07:57 PM No. Your organization has a responsibility to fill vacancies. Not that the world will come to an end if you don't. But you can't vote to turn a wrong into a right.
jstackpo Posted May 2, 2014 at 08:38 PM Report Share Posted May 2, 2014 at 08:38 PM Besides, being chair of a committee will look good on a cv. (You don't have to let it be known that "your" committee has no duties.)
Transpower Posted May 3, 2014 at 01:20 PM Report Share Posted May 3, 2014 at 01:20 PM Your Bylaws should list the standing committees; these need to be staffed. Special committees which have fulfilled their responsibility are automatically dissolved or "defunct."
