Guest misty Posted July 29, 2014 at 02:29 AM Report Share Posted July 29, 2014 at 02:29 AM If there are 7 people on the executive board, three vote for the motion and 4 abstain from voting by simply not voting, is the motion considered passed unamimously if there are no votes against the motion? Chris Harrison Posted July 29, 2014 at 02:48 AM Report Share Posted July 29, 2014 at 02:48 AM The motion was adopted 3-0. Unanimity carries no parliamentary significance (with the exception of unanimous consent which is not accomplished through a vote) unless your bylaws say otherwise. Rev Ed Posted July 29, 2014 at 02:59 PM Report Share Posted July 29, 2014 at 02:59 PM The 3-0 is a unanimous vote - meaning the motion passed. The only time abstaining has an impact on a vote it when the vote is deemed on the those present or the entire membership*. In those cases, abstaining is still not a vote, but it has the same impact as a no vote. *By 'entire membership', I mean the entire membership of the group - so in this case it means all the members of the Board.
