Guest Pat Posted September 5, 2014 at 02:42 AM Report Share Posted September 5, 2014 at 02:42 AM we have a small (25 member) 501c3 non profit. I am being elected as treasurer and my sister is being elected as asst treasurer. Is there anything in Roberts Rules that says this is not legal. Richard Brown Posted September 5, 2014 at 02:49 AM Report Share Posted September 5, 2014 at 02:49 AM No. As far as RONR is concerned, that is fine. Note: We don't do "legal", so I will say there is nothing in RONR that prohibits it.
Rev Ed Posted September 5, 2014 at 05:34 AM Report Share Posted September 5, 2014 at 05:34 AM There is nothing wrong with this according to RONR. Of course, I have never heard of the position of "Assistant Treasurer", especially for such a small organization. So, perhaps you need to check the By-laws to ensure the position actually exists - otherwise, check the By-laws to see if the organization can simply elect/appoint someone to an office. Or the organization cannot have a position of "Assistant Treasurer."

Well, now you have. I've actually seen this with several organizations. The value of having that position in a small organization is debatable, but certainly not unheard of. Richard Brown Posted September 5, 2014 at 11:50 AM Report Share Posted September 5, 2014 at 11:50 AM Of course, I have never heard of the position of "Assistant Treasurer", especially for such a small organization. I have and actually belonged to such an organization for several years. It was considered "treasurer-in-training" to become treasurer later and was definitely provided for in the bylaws.
