Guest Harold McDonald Posted March 25, 2015 at 05:01 PM Report Share Posted March 25, 2015 at 05:01 PM Several members of our church board asked the President (Senior Pastor) to leave the board meeting because they were "uncomfortable" discussing a personnel matter in front of him. Besides salary review and personal evaluation, is it ever proper to ask the President to leave the meeting while the board is in session. There was never a motion made to go into closed session. jstackpo Posted March 25, 2015 at 05:06 PM Report Share Posted March 25, 2015 at 05:06 PM If the President is actually a member of the board, he/she has a right to stay put. But check your bylaws -- sometimes a Pastor is not a board member (after all, he is (just-!) an employee of the church) even though he may be assigned the job of "Presiding Officer" in your bylaws. If he is not a board member, he can be removed from the meeting. Majority decision to do so. Or perhaps a 2/3 vote to remove is necessary depending on your bylaws - see p. 652. If he's not a member you don't need to be in executive session to force him to leave.
