Guest eem2 Posted October 4, 2015 at 09:31 PM Report Share Posted October 4, 2015 at 09:31 PM According to our bylaws, the Nominating Committee presents the slate at the October meeting and members vote at the November meeting. Nominations can be made from the floor at the November meeting. Can eligible names be added to the slate between the October meeting and the November meeting with no notice to the membership? Or, is the slate presented at the October meeting considered to be FINAL and only nominations from the floor can be accpeted on the day of the vote. Chris Harrison Posted October 4, 2015 at 10:09 PM Report Share Posted October 4, 2015 at 10:09 PM "A nominating committee is automatically discharged when its report is formally presented to the assembly, although if one of the nominees withdraws before the election, the committee is revived and should meet immediately to agree upon another nomination if there is time." (RONR p. 435).
Guest eleanor Posted October 4, 2015 at 11:07 PM Report Share Posted October 4, 2015 at 11:07 PM Thank you for the reply. In the past, we have had the Nominating Chair present the slate again at the November meeting. This process isn't noted in our bylaws and this has simply been our past practice. We have even had the Nominating Chair prepare the ballot for the election based on the slate and be involved in the election. We have not been following Robert's Rule and no one has objected. So, I will bring this to the attention of the body at the October meeting. With that said,it appears as if the president should take the lead and assign a tellers' committee to handle the voting process.

The president should indeed appoint a tellers' committee, but the function of the tellers is not to handle the voting process, but to count the ballots (possibly collecting the ballots as well) and prepare a report of the results of the vote. Please check RONR, 11th ed. pp. 414-418 for a detailed description of the responsibilities of the tellers. Your president, assuming he is also the chair, and whether or not he is a candidate, should conduct the election.
