Guest Nicole Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:02 PM Report Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:02 PM How do I suspend officer elections that are supposed to take place at the November meeting? The goal is to suspend elections until the December meeting and restart the nomination process since the bylaws were not correctly followed and the initial process was delayed by one month.
Hieu H. Huynh Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:06 PM Report Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:06 PM At the November meeting, make a motion to postpone the elections until the December meeting.
Guest Guest Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:24 PM Report Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:24 PM Because the bylaws were not followed, does it make sense to make a motion to re-boot the nomination process? July - elect nomination committee November - Elect Nomination CommitteeOctober - Nominations presented by committee February - Nominations presented by committee and taken from the floor and taken from the floorNovember - Officer Elections March - Officer Elections

Josh Martin Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:31 PM Report Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:31 PM Because the bylaws were not followed, does it make sense to make a motion to re-boot the nomination process?July - elect nomination committee November - Elect Nomination CommitteeOctober - Nominations presented by committee February - Nominations presented by committee and taken from the floor and taken from the floorNovember - Officer Elections March - Officer ElectionsA motion "to re-boot the nomination process" is not in order. It is unfortunate that the bylaws regarding nominations were not followed, but the bylaws still require elections in November. When the election is pending, the assembly can postpone the election to December if it wishes. (I'd personally be inclined to conduct the election in November, since it seems to me that even with a one-month delay, the process described still allows for more than enough time to make nominations.)Starting the entire process over because of a one-month delay in a five-month process makes no sense to me at all, but if the assembly insists on doing this, it can continue postponing the election to the next meeting at each meeting, elect a new nominating committee, order the nominating committee to report at a particular meeting, etc.
Guest Nicole Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:56 PM Report Posted November 5, 2015 at 02:56 PM Nominations were originally closed at the October Meeting. Can the nominations be opened with motion to re-open. What would be the correct procedure to do so?
Hieu H. Huynh Posted November 5, 2015 at 03:17 PM Report Posted November 5, 2015 at 03:17 PM A motion could be adopted to reopen nominations.
Guest Nicole Posted November 5, 2015 at 04:08 PM Report Posted November 5, 2015 at 04:08 PM As there is nothing in our bylaws that state that nominations cannot be reopened. Is there anything else as it pertains to RONR that would be an issue?

Guest Nicole Posted November 9, 2015 at 07:52 PM Report Posted November 9, 2015 at 07:52 PM Would the appropriate course of action then to be as follows?? When election process is brought before the general assembly: 1) Call a Point of Order to - Express issues with nomination process and outline the reasons that the vote needs to be suspended.2.) A motion would then need to be made to table/suspend elections until a future date (December Meeting).3.) Another Member would need to 2nd the motion.4.) Motion would then be voted on by general assembly.
Hieu H. Huynh Posted November 9, 2015 at 09:07 PM Report Posted November 9, 2015 at 09:07 PM A point of order doesn't seem appropriate in this case. The reasons for postponing the election could be given during debate of the motion to postpone the election.

The assembly can proceed to complete the election at the November meeting if it wishes to do so. It is unfortunate that the nominations procedure was started late, but this does not prevent the assembly from completing the election on time.In Step 2, cross out "table/suspend" and insert "postpone."Lastly, a motion to postpone is debatable (and you can then describe why it is desirable to postpone the election), so you wouldn't go immediately to the vote.
