pamclant Posted September 14, 2016 at 03:56 AM Report Share Posted September 14, 2016 at 03:56 AM If a motion was adopted in a meeting. Can a member the next following day send a request to the Presiding Officer to rescind the previously adopted motion? If yes, what is the correct procedure for bringing the motion back to the body. Richard Brown Posted September 14, 2016 at 04:07 AM Report Share Posted September 14, 2016 at 04:07 AM No. A motion to rescind something previously adopted must be made in a meeting. However, the member who wants to rescind the motion can give previous notice of his intent to introduce such a motion at the next meeting, thereby lowering the vote threshold from a two-thirds vote to a majority vote. Without previous notice, a motion to rescind something previously adopted requires a two-thirds vote or the vote of a majority of the entire membership. However, if previous notice is given, the motion to rescind something previously adopted requires only a majority vote. Edited to add: the form of a motion to rescind something previously adopted is no different from any other motion. the Mover says something along the lines of, "I move to rescind the motion adopted on September 12, 2016, which doubled our membership dues". Of course, if the action of the adopted motion is carried our before the next meeting, it cannot be effectively rescinded. Giving "previous notice" does not stop such action.
