Guest Jeff Smith Posted December 5, 2017 at 10:43 PM Report Share Posted December 5, 2017 at 10:43 PM If a motion is made, seconded, then motion made to amend before initial motion is voted on, and amendment to motion is seconded, can there be (1) a vote on the amended motion, or (2) must there be a vote on the motion/second to amend, then vote on the actual amended motion? jstackpo Posted December 5, 2017 at 11:20 PM Report Share Posted December 5, 2017 at 11:20 PM #2 is correct. In effect, you vote on specific items in the reverse order that the items (motions) are introduced.

The answer is (2). You can't do (1) because until a vote is taken on the amendment, there is no amended motion. And there might not be, if the amendment is voted down. In short, you can't vote on a motion until you know what it says, and you don't know what it says until all amendments are decided.
