Guest Dayle Posted February 4, 2018 at 06:57 PM Report Share Posted February 4, 2018 at 06:57 PM We only have one person stepping up to take a chair on our Board. Do we have to have a vote or can he just be sworn in without a vote?
Guest Who's Coming to Dinner Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:08 PM Report Share Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:08 PM If your bylaws don't require a vote by ballot, then the lone candidate may be declared elected by acclamation.
Gary Novosielski Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:08 PM Report Share Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:08 PM (edited) Check your bylaws to see if a ballot vote is required. If so, then a ballot vote must be held, with space for a write-in vote. Normally, at the election meeting, nominations from the floor are allowed, so there may be additional candidates at the last minute. If neither of these apply, and you end up with only one candidate for an office, the chair may declare the nominee elected by acclamation. This step may not be skipped and would be recorded in the minutes of that meeting. Guest Dayle Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:25 PM Report Share Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:25 PM We do allow for nominations from the floor, and printed ballots will be used. However, we know that no one will step forward. So I guess it still best to use printed ballots. Thanks very much.
Guest Who's Coming to Dinner Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:31 PM Report Share Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:31 PM Not only best, but mandatory if ballots are required according to your bylaws. You must read the bylaws to find out.

Guest Dayle Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:59 PM Report Share Posted February 4, 2018 at 07:59 PM One last question.....do both people residing in the same home vote if they are members, or only one. Thank you.

Thank you. I agree with JJ that this might be a matter of interpreting your bylaws. However, according to RONR, it is one member, one vote. If both spouses are members, they would both be entitled to vote. RONR does not treat people who are married or living in the same household differently from other members. Your bylaws however, might do so.
Richard Brown Posted February 4, 2018 at 10:59 PM Report Share Posted February 4, 2018 at 10:59 PM Guest Dayle, if voting is by ballot, members should also be allowed to write in votes for people who have not been nominated.
