We had no one willing to serve as president elect. Does the immediate past president then stay in office until and when the president elect position is filled? Or is the immediate past president out at the end of the year and a vacancy then take place on the Board of Directors as there is no president elect and the immnefaute past president,’s one year term has expired? I feel like something has to be missing here, because this sounds like people move from president-elect to past president without ever being President. The answer ultimately requires interpreting your bylaws, which only your organization can do, but it seems to me that, just using the meaning of the words, the immediate past president remains the immediate past president until someone else, having once been President, ceases to be so. However, we might be able to provide more help if you give us the exact language from your constitution. You'll also find that many of us here recommend against having an automatic role, such as a board position, for the immediate past president, but that's another issue. Gary Novosielski Posted June 12, 2019 at 07:07 PM Report Share Posted June 12, 2019 at 07:07 PM it seems to me that if the bylaws actually say that the IPP "serves for one year" on the board, without further qualification, then there is no reason to believe that the IPP would remain past one year. If the bylaws say "for one year or until the President-Elect is chosen" that would be a different story. It's not possible to try to guess the answer from a paraphrase.
