Rescinding motion

Recommended Posts

Guest Gini

At a regular council meeting in August, a motion to approve a health benefit package was seconded and carried.  After learning more information, a better health benefit package has been recommended.  how do we correctly rescind the previously approved motion and make a motion to approve the new health benefit package?

See RONR pp. 305-310.  However, before you all do anything you should determine what (if anything) has been done to execute the prior motion to approve the health benefit package and what legal or financial implications may be involved with backing out of it.

Guest Gini, Mr. Harrison is referring you to the motion to rescind or amend something previously adopted, which is the motion you would want to use. The vote required to adopt the motion depends on whether previous notice of the motion is given. It also has a few other special characteristics.

Guest Gini, I also note that you referred to your organization as a “council”. If this is a public body of some sort, such as a city council, state laws which supersede the rules in RONR might be applicable.
