Guest Barry Posted December 5, 2019 at 11:17 PM Report Share Posted December 5, 2019 at 11:17 PM If there is 1 candidate in the field and a motion is made that the secretary cast one vote in the name of that candidate, and at least one person objects to that motion must a paper ballot be taken? Chris Harrison Posted December 6, 2019 at 12:12 AM Report Share Posted December 6, 2019 at 12:12 AM Unless the Bylaws require a ballot vote the Chair should declare the sole candidate elected (RONR p. 443). If a ballot vote is required then a ballot vote is required even if there was only one nominee.
Richard Brown Posted December 6, 2019 at 08:25 PM Report Share Posted December 6, 2019 at 08:25 PM Agreeing with Mr. Harrison, I will add that the member who wants a secret ballot may make a motion to conduct the vote by secret ballot. It would require a majority vote to adopt. But, as Mr. Harrison pointed out, if your bylaws already require a secret ballot, then the vote must be by secret ballot and that provision may not be waived or suspended. If that is the case, the member should make a point of order that the bylaws require a secret ballot.
