Guest Guest Duane Posted December 12, 2019 at 11:05 PM Report Share Posted December 12, 2019 at 11:05 PM Assuming a special meeting is properly petitioned and called, who presides? Is it improper for those of us calling a contentious special meeting to ask the president to vacate so we can present our case to the members? Weldon Merritt Posted December 12, 2019 at 11:11 PM Report Share Posted December 12, 2019 at 11:11 PM You can ask anything, but that does not mean that whomever you ask must agree to your request. Why do you want the president to vacate the chair? And what do you mean by "present our case to the members"? What are you trying to accomplish? Guest Guest Duane Posted December 12, 2019 at 11:38 PM Report Share Posted December 12, 2019 at 11:38 PM Thank you, Weldon. I'm not sure we want the president to vacate - just wondering if it was a possibility. We are trying to break away from the national organization and have been rebuffed by the board every time we have tried to "present our case to the members." Richard Brown Posted December 13, 2019 at 03:04 AM Report Share Posted December 13, 2019 at 03:04 AM If it is desired to have someone other than the President to preside at this special meeting (or at any meeting), and if he will not voluntarily turn over the chair to the vice president or someone else, the rules can be suspended so as to prevent him from presiding at that meeting. The motion to do so requires a 2/3 vote. Unless someone else is named in the motion to preside, the vice president would preside at the meeting. See pages 651–653 of RONR.
