SKT Posted March 13, 2020 at 10:55 PM Report Share Posted March 13, 2020 at 10:55 PM HI, WE have a member who continually uses point of order as a means fo debating a motion. Could our chair interrupt the member and tell him he can't use point of order to debate?
Atul Kapur Posted March 13, 2020 at 11:33 PM Report Share Posted March 13, 2020 at 11:33 PM Absolutely. In fact, the chair should do this if it is not a proper point of order. Otherwise, another member should raise a point of order against the first one.
Guest Zev Posted March 14, 2020 at 02:43 AM Report Share Posted March 14, 2020 at 02:43 AM What's going on? Did not the presiding officer read Standard Descriptive Characteristic #5 on page 249 that states specifically that a Point Of Order is not debatable? So how did this happen? Say Mr. Jones has the floor, and a member interrupts him by calling Point of Order, the chair should respond The member will state his point of order. If the member begins to respond with anything other than a valid point that some rule is being broken, the chair should interrupt by simply but firmly repeating The member will state the point of order! If this doesn't work a third time, the chair should stop the member and if appropriate, explain the purpose of a valid point of order, and then say, So, if the member has no point of order, Mr. Jones has the floor.
