Amending Motions

There was a motion voted on and carried back in 2019 to allow a member of our team to complete some work on our grounds for a certain amount of money. However, there has been some work done on the grounds and members feel it justified that he be paid a percentage for work done. However, we would like to hire an outside contractor to go ahead and finish the job. How should we go about doing this? A new motion? Some sort of amendment to the original motion?

this is an example of a motion to "amend something previously adopted"

What guest Seth needs to use is the “motion to amend or rescind something previously adopted“, not a motion to “adopt something previously adopted”.

Guest Seth, the motions to rescind something previously adopted and amend something previously adopted are subject to special rules, primarily the fact that they both require a higher vote for adoption unless previous notice of the intent to make the motion is given at the previous meeting or in the call of the meeting.

if previous notice of the intent to make the motion is given, they can both be adopted with a regular majority vote. However, if previous notice is not given, then they both require either a two thirds vote, or, in the alternative, the vote of a majority of the entire membership. That is all explained in section 35 of RONR (12th Ed.)

In 35:1, we learn that the motion to Rescind and the motion to Amend Something Previously Adopted are two distinct forms that do have the same rules and are covered in one section.

There certainly is no need for a motion to adopt something that has already been adopted.
