Guest Jen Posted February 1, 2024 at 08:14 PM Report Share Posted February 1, 2024 at 08:14 PM Our secretary resigned. We plan to elect a new one at our next meeting. I'm wondering what the proper procedure is for this meeting. Does the chair appoint a secretary pro-temp to conduct roll call, establish a quorum, and count votes during the election or does the body elect a temporary secretary? If it's the second option, is the chair alone responsible for roll call and establishing quorum? Thank in advance!
Joshua Katz Posted February 1, 2024 at 08:20 PM Report Share Posted February 1, 2024 at 08:20 PM The body elects a secretary pro tem. The chair is responsible for establishing quorum, as usual. RONR does not require a roll call to establish quorum. Be sure you are following your rules in filling the vacancy. Does the body that is meeting have the authority to fill it? Has notice been given? RONR doesn't require a roll call, so it's up to your organization how to handle that. Certainly, one method would be for the chair to do it. It's always the chair's job to establish the presence of a quorum.
