tabled motion

If a motion is tabled until the next meeting, how is the motion brought back into consideration. Must there be a motion to remove the item from the table which, if seconded and passed restores the item into consideration? Alternatively could the motion simply be made and seconded again to begin discussion? Any insight would help immensley.

A motion to lay the question on the table until the next meeting is not in order. The proper motion to use is Postpone to a Certain Time, RONR (10th ed.), §14, pp. 172ff. See also pp. 207-209.

When a question is properly postponed to the next meeting, it comes up during the Orders of the Day (special orders or general orders, depending on the form of the motion to postpone) in the established order of business. See RONR (10th ed.), §41, pp. 340ff.

Also, take a look at FAQ #12 at the Robert's Rules of Order website, www.robertsrules.com.

See Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, tenth edition, 2000, published by DaCapo.

See "Postpone to a Definite Time" in RONR.

See "Lay on the Table" in RONR.

Note the differences.

You aren't tabling anything.

You are postponing definitely.

Within "Postpone to a definite time," note well the cross reference to "general orders and unfinished business."

(That is how to re-entertain the postponed item.)

That's The Book.
