lipets Posted September 25, 2010 at 10:14 PM Report Share Posted September 25, 2010 at 10:14 PM tabling motionWe had a meeting a motion was made and debate began, it was stated that the motion needed more debate.Someone made a motion to table the vote until debate was complete. The chair decided that the first motion must be voted on before the motion to table.I objected, but the vote proceeded.I believe the vote should not have taken place and is invalid.I looked thru the rules and can't pin point the rule on this matter. Please help.Jim
George Mervosh Posted September 25, 2010 at 10:24 PM Report Share Posted September 25, 2010 at 10:24 PM Nothing is invalid but the procedure was not proper. The motion to table should have been a motion to postpone (tabling is only used to take up something more urgent), and the motion to postpone would be voted on before the main motion itself.Again, it's sloppy, but it's done.If the main motion was adopted, move to rescind or amend it (pp. 293-299), if it was defeated, make it again at the next meeting (p.325ff).
