Guest Nicole C. Posted May 14, 2015 at 07:04 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2015 at 07:04 PM A Board member made a motion to maintain an existing position. The motion was not to amend or rescind the existing position; it was merely to maintain the existing position. A vote was taken and resulted in a tie (7-7) with the Chair voting. A second vote was taken excluding the Chair's vote and resulted in a vote of 7 opposing the motion and 6 supporting the motion. Either way the motion lost. Since the motion was to maintain the position but was not carried, does that mean that the organization no longer has a position or does it mean nothing changes? Was the motion even valid? It was an improper motion and nothing would have changed whether it was adopted or not.....which is why it was improper.

Was the motion even valid? The motion was not in order to begin with, since approval and rejection achieve the same result--the status quo. The tie vote defeated the motion anyway, so there's still no effect. The vote should not have been done over, since it was already defeated. So you did a lot of meaningless stuff, and the result is that nothing has changed.
